WORK HISTORY
Director of the Preclinical Cancer Models Shared Resource @Huntsman Cancer Institute
Direct the smooth running of the Huntsman Cancer Institute Preclinical Cancer Models (PCM) Shared Resource (formerly the Preclinical Research Resource, PRR)• Lead translational in vivo preclinical strategy and execution supporting therapeutic development and biomarker strategy using oncology models including CDX (immunocompromised and syngeneic), PDX, and GEMMs. • Deliver studies for academic and industry partners, translating questions into practical preclinical plans and executing to decision-grade endpoints. • Partner with teams end-to-end: model selection, study design, dosing and scheduling strategy, response monitoring (including imaging where appropriate), tissue endpoints, and interpretation aligned to go/no-go decisions. • Maintain a validated portfolio of 450+ patient-derived models (PDX/PDO) supporting broad investigator access. • Support a broad user base (~100 users annually) and coordinate complex, multi-resource translational projects by aligning handoffs across tissue acquisition, pathology, molecular profiling, statistics/bioinformatics, and immune profiling resources. • Direct a patient-derived model program spanning PDX and PDO with standardized derivation, validation, QC, biobanking, and distribution workflows to support reproducibility and confidence in model identity. • Maintain scalable compliance and risk-management infrastructure (IACUC governance and related requirements) that streamlines study start-up and supports consistent, audit-ready execution. • Run high-demand shared resource operations: team leadership, budgeting, procurement oversight, capacity planning, and continuous improvement to deliver cost-effective and reliable service. • PCM-supported work has contributed to 75+ peer-reviewed publications and supports multi-investigator mechanisms (eg P01, U54, U01, U24).

ABOUT DAVID HENRY LUM
I’m the Director of the Preclinical Cancer Models (PCM) Shared Resource at Huntsman Cancer Institute (NCI CCSG-supported). I lead translational preclinical strategy and execution to generate decision-grade evidence for therapeutic development and biomarker hypotheses, with a primarily in vivo focus.PCM’s strengths include patient-derived xenografts (PDX), GEMMs, longitudinal study execution and monitoring, and integrated workflows from model selection and study design through treatment studies, imaging, tissue endpoints, and reporting. PCM also includes a robust patient-derived organoid (PDO) capability that supports translational discovery and biomarker-informed hypothesis testing. My role bridges scientific rigor with operational delivery: compliant study enablement (including IACUC governance and related requirements), SOP- and QC-driven workflows, budgeting and resource planning, team leadership, and partnerships with external users.I’m most useful when a team needs a collaborative leader who can translate a biological question into a practical preclinical plan, execute it reliably, and deliver data that holds up for internal decisions, grant review, and publication.
