ABOUT DAVID THOMSON
I am an Oil & Gas Professional with considerable experience at analysing the value or otherwise of Upstream activity. I also have experience in product development, managing projects and driving business growth. Starting my career in energy journalism, I learnt about the Oil & Gas industry reporting on North Sea and European products. I then moved to Wood Mackenzie where I spent the next 15 years developing my skills. In my first role as an analyst, my work focused on economic analysis of oil and gas fields in northern Latin American countries.I was promoted to Principal Analyst where my key deliverable was adding subscriber content to our Sub Saharan Upstream service, primarily in West and Central Africa, and financial modelling of key assets and companies in the region. I analysed oil and gas companies, fields and opportunities and made regular research trips to meet operators, regulators and interested parties in Angola, Nigeria, Congo and Ghana which grew my network considerably. My next role at Wood Mackenzie was Product Manager for the Exploration Service. I initially combined it with my SSA Upstream role which was an opportunity for me to demonstrate my time management skills and ensure workflow delivery. As Product Manager, I developed global exploration products, drove revenue, project managed exploration reports, as well as managing the workflow of the global team of analysts. My role changed to that of Principal Analyst in the Exploration team. I delivered global exploration analysis and content, as well as continuing to help develop products within the Exploration Service suite. In addition to modelling and tracking activity, I interacted with clients to ensure their needs were met and to identify new prospects. From June 2020 to October 2020, I was a self-employed consultant, I was engaged by various clients, including a start-up and an NGO. I conducted primary research, company and activity analysis using my experience in the upstream industry. In October 2020, I started work for Welligence Energy Analytics. I will be responsible for growing its Sub-Saharan Africa upstream coverage, as well as its client base.I’m always interested in making connections with people in the same field or with aligned interests.
