The United States is losing the battle against opioid addiction. Overdose deaths have skyrocketed over the past ten years, and the problem will worsen. We have failed to adequately expand access to medications and treatment in a meaningful way. Medications for opioid addiction, aka MAT/MOUD, are highly effective, yet only 11% of people with opioid addiction are prescribed these life-saving medications. We must expand access to MAT/MOUD in a big way while promoting harm reduction strategies like carrying naloxone, or deaths due to opioid overdose will continue to increase.Drug addiction is not a moral failing but rather a chronic and treatable disease of the brain. Stigma and misinformation are too common in addiction treatment and discourage patients from seeking help, understanding their treatment options, and receiving proper evidence-based treatment. This misinformation and prejudice have no place in addiction treatment and contribute to suffering and death.With over 20 years of experience, Dr. David Deyhimy is an Orange County physician board certified in addiction medicine and anesthesiology. He believes that addiction, like many other chronic diseases, is treatable and often curable by combining proper medication with education, support, and behavioral change. Helping patients and families navigate the complicated landscape of addiction and recovery are tremendously rewarding. Addiction medicine is one of the few specialties that allows a physician to improve and save lives daily. Treatment must be accessible and flexible for patients and their families. Removing barriers to treatment improves patient engagement, and engagement is one of the single most significant predictors of better outcomes for patients.
