About David Gonzalez

Writer, photographer and editor with deep experience in print and multimedia locally, nationally and in Latin America and the Caribbean. From the 1980s South Bronx emerging from decades of abandonment and official neglect, through the social and political upheaval in Central America and the Caribbean at the beginning of the 21st Century, I have consistently provided nuanced coverage that deftly uses human, on-the-ground detail to illustrate not only the central issues being debated among politicians, scholars and policy-makers, but to also highlight innovative solutions.

Experience

  1. Reporter

    The New York Times

    Sep 1990 — Present

Have been a senior writer, columnist and foreign correspondent. On Metro, worked as Bronx Buro Chief, Religion Writer, About New York Columnist, Super GA and Citywide Columnist, as well as working on several award-winning narrative features:\"House Afire,\" about the life of a storefront Pentecostal Church;\"The Arts & Sugar Hill,\" about a block that produced several world-renowned musicians, writers and artists who came of age in the 1940s; and \"Remade in America,\" a profile of an undocumented family where one child has citizenship. Also served from 99 thru 2003 as Central America/Caribbean Buro Chief, with frequent reporting trips to Cuba, Haiti, Guatemala, El Salvador, Panama and Haiti. Covered for other reporters in Mexico, Venezuela and Peru. Mosyt of my work consisted of enterprise pieces looking at social, political and cultural dynamics, as well as breaking news.I have recently taken over as Co-Editor of the Lens blog, where I am primarily responsible for the written text on each post. With my co-editor, I help guide the general direction on the blog: I approve/assign ideas and edit them; also write several posts a week, including the main Showcase piece, which usually runs at 1200 words. Can also handle production work and produce the slide shows and embedded graphics that accompany each post.Having been a mainstay on the Metro Staff, especially on matters pertaining to the Bronx and Latino communities, I continue to do a photo/essay feature called \"Side Street,\" where I use an image as part of an essay about a person, place or moment that\'s out of the way or off people\'s radar.
