Bristol, GB

Managing Hinkley Point C\'s \'Balance of Margins\' Programme. This fundamentally involves directing strategy to ensure emergent issues threatening the site\'s safety case are effectively managed, such that they do not threaten our ability to Operate Hinkley Point C\'s reactors safety and efficiently.Day-to-day this involves- reviewing technical issues which threaten full power operation, and operational flexibility- establishing, costing and articulating methods to resolve issues - including changes to design of reactor components, changes to safety case strategies and methodology, and potential changes to operating methods- prioritising and driving progress in solutions, mitigations and fallback positions- managing a diverse portfolio of stakeholders, including directors within HPC project, nuclear safety committees and advocates, and regulators (particularly the Office for Nuclear Regulation). My favourite aspects of the position are- the ability to have a significant impact on key project decisions- working with with a wide variety of people, particularly at senior levels, and using this experience to further develop my strategic thinking, approach to decision making, and communication methods- working in areas which are technically complex - and incredibly interesting

ABOUT DAVID DONAGHY

The purpose of my career is to work against global climate change, and I consider releasing energy through nuclear fission and fusion to be the most important methods of meeting the world\'s growing energy needs without releasing emissions that would make irreversible changes to the earth\'s climate. Following a degree in Physics at the University of Oxford I have worked at a number of operational and decommissioning nuclear sites across the UK. From 2013 to 2018 I worked at Dungeness B, mainly as a reactor operator managing a 1550MWth reactor and turbine set, and also as a senior authorised person and simulator instructor. Following joining the company\'s emerging talent scheme, I moved to the newly formed nuclear skills alliance, in the first batch of control room simulator tutors for Hinkley Point C. We learnt a lot from power stations in France and the UK, and established the country’s first reactor operator programme in a generation. I was promoted from there to a training group head position, and spent around 3 years managing a team of instructors delivering technical training programmes at all of the UK\'s nuclear power stations. I enjoyed helping my team grow their enthusiasm and skill sets, and was very proud that despite the covid pandemic my team\'s output grew around 50%, from around hours of training per year to around learnt a great deal from working at different sites, and managing training all across the country, I felt the time was right to return to the sharp end, and in Summer 2023 I took up an operations Engineer post at Hinkley Point B. I\'m enjoying working with a fantastic group of people, and beyond the day-to-day enjoyment of power station operations am enjoying sub-roles leading projects and initiatives within the \'management of the asset\' and \'configuration management\' groups on site.
