About David Deal

I currently serve as the Director of Engineering and Platform for the Linux Foundation, managing and directing a team of talented engineers. Our team is primarily responsible for building, maintaining, and supporting the LFX platform (which includes ten products). These products and services serve as the foundation (pun!) for supporting our open-source communities.My professional experience includes more than 15 years of software engineering experience within large and small agile project environments, including experience developing distributed architectures using various object-oriented, functional, and service-based methodologies.I have an exciting history of developing software using Go, Python, Scala/Java, Hadoop/Spark, and other questionable languages. Recently, I’ve focused on Data Analytics, where I manage a team of data engineers supporting our Data Cloud objectives using Snowflake, debt, FiveTran, Census, Stitch, and other custom data integration tools. This conglomeration of disparate data sources feeds into our data pipeline to provide knowledge and actionable insights to our business stakeholders in the Open-Source community.In my role as Director of Engineering and Platform, I balance my time between engineering leadership, staffing/hiring, infrastructure budgeting, collaborating with vendors, coordinating with our Data Privacy Office, Security, infrastructure modeling, stakeholder support/requirements management, and some (if I’m lucky!) lower level software modeling, tooling, and software build-out. Recently, I’ve worked to include various AI tools to help our engineering team increase velocity, reduce bugs/reworks, and improve our product/tooling documentation.I enjoy working with junior and senior staff/engineers alike. In my field, even the newest employees can contribute by sharing new technologies, ideas, innovations, and trade tricks. In that spirit, I love to read, learn, and embrace new trends to solve customer problems. That\'s one of the things that makes our industry so exciting!
