About David Daly

David has worked on computer (hardware and software) performance across his career, from analytical models, to simulations, to performance tests, and performance investigation. At MongoDB he helped build their performance infrastructure from scratch into a world class system and built the teams that use that infrastructure, always with a focus on increasing the understanding of how MongoDB\'s software performs for its customers. At various times this required focusing on complete end-to-end automation, control of test noise and variability, working around test noise, and building processes to make sure that issues identified by the infrastructure were properly recognized and addressed. He is involved in the performance engineering community, including being on the steering committee for the International Conference on Performance Engineering. He has facilitated collaborations between industry and academia, including sharing internal performance data to enable the first ever ICPE Data Challenge, and ultimately continuing to advance the state of the art in performance regression detection. Before MongoDB, David worked at IBM Research at the T.J. Watson Research Center. He worked on next generation POWER microprocessor from 20••••14, including the POWER8 microprocessor. The main focus of this work was the design and performance analysis of the memory subsystem using trace driven, queuing, and spreadsheet analysis. Additional work focused on system scalability, memory coherence, and network interconnects, as well as system reliability and availability. Before working on next generation Power processor design, he worked on performance modeling, analysis, and design for a variety of novel computer memory subsystem features.David received a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois in 2005, where he worked on performance and dependability modeling in the PERFORM research group. He also received a M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois, and received a B.S. in Computer Engineering from Syracuse University.
