ABOUT DAVID CULOS

I am fortunate and extremely grateful to be entering my twenty-eighth year as a pilot and 18th as a Captain with Porter airlines. With over hours of flight time, the love of my job is still fueled by deep appreciation of the aesthetics of flight, the craft of piloting and a continuing desire to learn and challenge myself. My enthusiasm and hard work have led to numerous leadership positions within the companies I have been fortunate to work at. I have gravitated toward training as a way to teach myself more about the science and craft of flight and to improve the standard of training and safety at the operations I have been involved with. Over the most recent years I have specialized in ground and simulator course-ware development (technical training, Crew Resource Management, LOFT and training videos). I have also collaborated in the development of 705 operation SOP and line training and checking. As my career progresses, I find my interest drawn to the convergence of human and technical factors of flight; specifically, issues regarding cognition and learning, the role of expertise, and CRM. My company, AlphaVR Flight Simulation is a virtual and mixed reality pilot training systems integration company. Our goal is to work with a diverse aviation client set to develop and integrate VR/MR training tools, biometrics and performance analytics. These emerging and complementary technologies will be an indispensable supplement to traditional flight training devices but with a compelling value proposition as the airline industry moves toward adoption of competency based training.
