About David Crass
I took my Ph.D. at the Institute for the Study of Earth and Man at Southern Methodist University. During my time at the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology my research focused on the colonial Carolina backcountry with an emphasis on the role of ethnicity on settlement patterning. As Georgia State Archaeologist my responsibilities included policy development, technical assistance regarding the day-to-day management of publicly-owned sites, research, and policy/legal issues for both terrestrial and underwater resources spanning time periods from the Late Pleistocene to the late 19th century. I developed cultural resources law enforcement training for the Georgia State Law Enforcement Training Center and served as technical specialist on both state and federal law enforcement cases, including in the field. As Director of the Georgia State Historic Preservation Office I reorganized the office while navigating through the Great Recession of 2008/9, worked with the Georgia General Assembly to increase protection for Georgia\'s submerged cultural resources and improve the state historic rehabilitation tax credit statutes, and developed and instituted an agency-wide leadership academy for mid career employees.
