About David Coates
Experience: Nearly 5 decades of nuclear energy application experience: military, commercial, and laboratory. Goal: Assist the staff of nuclear facilities to achieve and sustain excellent performance.What we do at MFC:Idaho National Laboratory is the USA’s laboratory for nuclear energy research. There are several directorates within the lab. The Materials and Fuels Complex is the directorate for which I am the Chief Operating Officer. It is the largest directorate with about 1,100 employees. MFC is where prototype nuclear fuel is designed, built, tested and post irradiation examination is performed. We have several facilities and two research reactors to support this. We are also developing the test beds for multiple prototype microreactors and hosting the construction of first-of-a-kind reactors. Lastly, we build radioisotope thermoelectric generators for NASA deep space probes and Mars rovers.
