About David Carlson

David Carlson, DO serves as the Chairman of the Board of Directors for Physicians Insurance Company based in Seattle, Washington. Physicians Insurance is the largest insurer of physicians and critical access hospitals in the Pacific Northwest, serving more than 8,500 members. He oversees the board, its committees and provides governing leadership for the company’s operations.Dr. Carlson recently served Multicare as chief physician officer and executive vice president, provider enterprise. In this role Dr. Carlson developed and lead the systemwide vision and strategy for MultiCare’s physicians and advanced practice providers, including population health, quality, safety, clinical integration, medical staff affairs and provider wellness. He also oversaw many of MultiCare’s major clinical initiatives, including a broad-scale transformation of care program to standardize key clinical pathways and an organization-wide effort to become a high reliability organization. Prior to joining MultiCare, Dr. Carlson served as chief physician executive for Hospital Sisters Health System and chief medical officer for Conemaugh Health System in Johnstown, PA. Previous leadership roles also include Ochsner Clinic Foundation in Baton Rouge, LA; Summit Health System in Chambersburg, PA; and Lovelace Health Systems in Albuquerque, NM. Dr. Carlson also served on the boards of the Washington Healthcare Alliance and Physicians of Southwest Washington. He currently serves on the board for United Way of Pierce County.Dr. Carlson is a board-certified family practice physician, with a subspecialty in geriatrics. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Pennsylvania State University, his medical degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and his Master of Business Administration from Alvernia University. Major Accomplishments:• Created strategic partnership with third largest FQHC in the US to help create a sustainable care delivery model for underserved populations.• Developed partnership with health sciences university to create a long-term supply of healthcare professionals and a new primary care residency program.• Built population health team that operated third most successful NextGen ACO.• Led development of PACE program (Program of All Inclusive Care for the Elderly).• Rapid Growth of medical group through organic growth, urgent care centers and acquisition of practices.• Redesign of medical group governance and compensation models.
