ABOUT DAVID ARTERBURN

Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute has benefited from two decades of David Arterburn’s expertise in health services research and real-world data science, with a focus on obesity, diabetes, and shared decision-making. As Manager of the Investigative Sciences Division, he co-leads strategic efforts and supervises a multidisciplinary team of eight physicians and psychologists. His work has contributed to securing substantial research funding including over $25 million as principal investigator, primarily from the National Institutes of Health and the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute. David’s internationally recognized research focuses on comparative effectiveness of weight management and diabetes interventions, bariatric surgery, and pharmacoepidemiology. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed papers. David has co-chaired the 2025 NIDDK Workshop on GLP-1 Medications, the 2013 NIH Workshop on Long-term Outcomes of Bariatric Surgery, and the NCQA Adult Obesity Measurement Panel. He served as a Medical Editor for the Informed Medical Decisions Foundation for more than a decade. His leadership in the Investigative Sciences Division aligns with his commitment to cultivating high-functioning teams. With multiple federal and foundation grants, David continues to drive impactful research while supporting collaboration across diverse organizations.
