About David Apple
I am a Mercy Minister and trainer of people and congregations for works of service. Overcoming trauma as a child and an adult-with the grace and help of Jesus Christ-has equipped me to help others minister to those who are broken or brokenhearted.I have served with Tenth Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia since 1988. In that capacity I oversee over 200 volunteer staff in outreach, evangelism and hospitality to homeless persons, people with AIDS, at risk children, nursing home residents, incarcerated persons and people with special needs. My ministry includes deacon training and equipping churches for ministry in their communities. I also serve as a Chaplain with the Philadelphia Police Department.I earned a B.A. from Calvin College, Certificate in Pastoral Counseling Certificate from CCEF, and MATS and M.Div. from Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary. My doctoral project on congregational transformation was entitled “The Heart of a Servant.” I came to salvation in 1966 through the incarnational ministry of Northside Chapel CRC in inner-city Paterson, NJ. That experience shaped my life and ministry. My wife Kate teaches English at The City School (City Center Academy), an urban Christian high school.
Experience
Director of Mercy Ministries
Jan 1988 — Present
In this capacity, I employed the time, witness, talents and resources of church members in ministry to many of the forgotten people groups in our urban neighborhoods: homeless persons, people with AIDS, at risk children, single parents, separated and divorced persons, nursing home residents and incarcerated persons. In addition, I facilitate mercy ministry and deacon training seminars locally and elsewhere.
