Whilst working with the Coventry-based Motorcycle School, my role was to teach and assess the level of the rider before awarding a compulsory basic training form, if sufficient levels were attained. This lets the rider use a motorcycle on the road with L plates for a maximum of two years unless further training is successful and a full category A or variant is awarded. In other words, my role was to provide the foundation steps in terms of safety and knowledge.This was the most rewarding and challenging role I have held and used all of my skills while teaching me new and exciting ways to help others learn. Age ranges, language barriers and fear levels were daily obstacles that needed to be navigated in safe and calm ways.Motorcycling is dangerous, yet a deeply rewarding activity when the right education and environment is present. When teaching, the DVSA requires that the information and skills are delivered in a student-centric way. The information needs to be delivered in a calm yet authoritative way, there are clear risks that need to be continually risk assessed and DVSA guidance to be followed.
