ABOUT DAVE SMITH

Building things runs in our family. Recalling my childhood junkyard scavenging adventures with my dad, we would relish unearthing parts to rebuild his AMC Hornet. He could construct a car from scratch I loved it. It really isn’t surprising I inherited some of his natural curiosity about how machines work. By the age of 10, I was able to disassemble and repair the family TV. But it wasn’t until I made it to our nation’s capital, to attend the University of Ottawa for economics and then later Algonquin College for programming, that I realized that it would be software, rather than economics which would satisfy my curiosity and instincts to create. I traveled to London to work with Canada Trust. CT was such a great fit that I can honestly say it never felt like ‘work’. As CT became TD Canada Trust, I grew along with the company switching to Credit Risk. The rigor in adjudication for credit was next level. There was no sense of humor about a strategy that exceeded provision for credit losses! Selected achievements during that time include: • Productivity: Executed Marketing Campaigns increased 300% • Credit Card Strategy: Approvals +18%, projected losses -19% on volumes of $150M/yr. • Risk Governance: Aeroplan acquisition. Mitigation of credit and operational risks. Front book $278M, Back book $3.3B. But as can happen in life, I had drifted away from the things that really excited me: Collaborating. Building. Creating positive emotional experiences. So when the opportunity arose to build and solve a problem - I had to take it. The Problem: Portable devices have given us the ability to communicate from anywhere. But our environments haven\'t kept pace. As someone with chronic back pain, I know this first hand. So I started a company to fill the gap created by our technology. We shouldn’t have to be anchored to our office chairs or our offices. We can work anywhere and everywhere. My company, UCOBO, came out of the desire to bring our bodies into harmony with our environments. The first offering, the LoBAK, is a wonderful example of putting you first. It is a customizable portable back support. Patent pending, it is personalized so you can take your comfort with you. This is an exciting adventure filled with heart-stopping moments and challenges I never thought I would take on – but as they say, one bite at a time… So, let me ask you – how is your back? Check out my landing page There will be a Kickstarter fall 2021 and I’d love to know what you think!
