About Darryl Gaines
HONORS, PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS, AND ACTIVITIES: Darryl Gaines is a former National Football League professional football player for the Kansas City Chiefs and Canadian Football League player for the Edmonton Eskimos. Inducted into the 2017 Class of Mississippi Valley State University Hall of Fame. He was selected by NASA to participate in a Fellowship at The University of Michigan, School of Business, where he completed Business Acumen for High Potential Leaders. Gaines received an Executive MBA from the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, Ca. in 2016. He is also a Certification Project Management Professional (PMP) since 2013. EXPERIENCE: Gaines has 30 years of experience with NASA and 3 years with McDonnell Douglas Aircraft. His experience includes developing Avionics and Software for Aeronautics Flight and Ground computer systems. He has working relationships with a number of commercial businesses, as well as international partners in Russia, Japan, Canada, and Europe. Currently serving as Acting Deputy Director of the Exploration Architecture Integration and Science Directorate at NASA Johnson Space Center where he is leading organizational efforts towards the Artemis Program specifically Moon to MARs Architecture, Systems Engineering and Integration, Business Support and Science. In this role he also provides leadership for the Commercial Lunar Payloads Services Project (CLPS).He transitioned to NASA’s Associate Program Manager, Commercial LEO Development Program in 2022 to develop commercially-owned and operated LEO destinations from which NASA, along with other customers, can purchase services and stimulate the growth of commercial activities in LEO. He was selected as the Assistant to the Center Director at Johnson Space Center in 2016 and Assistant to the Center Director at Stennis Space Center in 2018 providing technical leadership, guidance, and management support to the Center Director, Deputy Director and Associate Director. In April of 2011, Gaines assumed the role of Deputy Manager of the ISS PP & C Office. As the Deputy, he was responsible for providing leadership and direction for the PP & C office which includes management and oversight of the $3.8B ISS budget, Program Assessments and Estimations, procurements, Information Technology and Configuration Management. In July 2010, Mr. Gaines served as the Executive Officer for the Associate Administrator, Independent Program Cost and Evaluation Office (IPCE) in Washington D.C supporting the Associate Administrator and Deputy.
