ABOUT DARREN BEATTY
I am a senior finance and governance leader with more than 20 years’ experience supporting CEOs, Boards, and executive teams to make clear, strategic, and values‑aligned decisions. My career spans Big 4 chartered accounting, NZX‑listed companies, industry‑owned entities, commercial and charitable organisations, Māori organisations, and large iwi groups. I’ve worked across sectors as diverse as energy and infrastructure, fisheries, tourism, aviation, media, and iwi development, giving me a broad commercial perspective and a strong grounding in complex, multi‑stakeholder environments.Alongside deep financial management capability, I have led operational teams across grants administration, managed investment schemes, legal, data, evaluation, and monitoring. I specialise in building systems that lift organisational performance—centralising functions, modernising platforms, and establishing evaluation and data frameworks that strengthen accountability and impact. My governance and risk leadership includes close engagement with Boards and Audit & Risk Committees, leading internal audit programmes, resetting policy frameworks, and overseeing climate‑related risk and reporting. I have managed high‑volume shared services environments, delivered year‑end audit and tax programmes, and led the preparation of annual reports, Statements of Service Performance, and climate disclosures.I am a Te Reo Māori speaker, an effective communicator at all levels, and a people‑centred leader who builds high‑performing teams. I bring disciplined financial stewardship, strong risk insight, and a commitment to kaupapa‑driven, intergenerational outcomes.I am building a broad and deep governance portfolio across iwi commercial entities, Treaty settlement structures, and national regulatory bodies. My roles as a Director on the commercial boards of Tātau Tātau o Te Wairoa and Tupu Tonu strengthen my experience in investment governance, commercial strategy, and intergenerational asset stewardship. I also serve as a Trustee of the Crown Forest Rental Trust, contributing to the governance of significant Treaty‑related assets and supporting iwi through the claims process. Earlier experience with Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori and the External Reporting Board (XRB) adds a strong foundation in Crown–Māori relationships, regulatory systems, and contemporary reporting and assurance standards.
