Sun City, CA, US

The founder and CEO of Clean Water International, Darrell Nelson, gave a PechaKucha presentation about how he transitioned from working in IT to philanthropy, how Clean Water International came to be, and the need for action in the global water crisis. While on an assignment in the Philippines, Darrell saw children living in adverse poverty. This inspired him to give back to the community. Why focus on water? Darrell learned about the water crisis affecting the entire planet. We can’t live without it, but it can make people sick and even kill them when it contains bacteria, pathogens, and viruses. Imagine how that impacts a child who has an underdeveloped immune system. Over 440 million school hours are lost every year due to water-borne diseases.Around the world, children from infancy to five years old have the highest mortality rate due to water-borne disease. The equivalent of nine busloads of kindergarten children dying every day. It doesn’t need to happen. It shouldn’t happen! When people don’t have access to clean, potable water, they experience a lack of education, jobs, and opportunities. This forms a vicious cycle that perpetuates poverty. Clean water changes everything.
