At the age of ten I was certain I wanted to be a marine biologist. On a school trip we collected bugs from a pond and classified them. I was inspired. No cute dolphins for me, I was going to be a marine biologist studying aquatic insects.Needless to say, I did not become a marine biologist. I continued to love math and science, so studied engineering and computer science in university. I went on to pursue opportunities that I found interesting and that challenged me to learn something new. Despite this, I always felt like I didn’t truly know what I wanted to be. I felt I should have a defined plan and the certainty of my ten-year-old self in what job I ultimately wanted.In more recent years, I have come to realise that a prescribed plan to a certain role or title is not what matters. For me, success is the opportunity to follow my passion and build something with real-world impact. So now, I am absolutely certain what I want to be.I want to be a leader. To make hard decisions. To support my team in reaching their full potential. To listen carefully when my team tells me where I can improve.I want to be challenged. To be pushed out of my depth into a new domain. To make mistakes. And to learn from them.I want to build things. To use technology to create products that solve real problems. To build businesses that earn and keep the trust of customers. And to build teams of amazing people who can make that a reality.
