Experience
Radio Disc Jockey
Jan 1992 — Present · Seattle, WA, US
For 33⅓ years I’ve used radio to make global music feel present-tense—placing lineages and new experiments in conversation and building trust with listeners through context, interviews, and in-studio sessions. Just as important, I’ve worked behind the scenes to help KCMU/KEXP evolve from a great local station into a globally recognized platform. What I do (and built):Curate and program Wo’Pop, a weekly three-hour modern global music show; book and host live in-studio performances and artist interviews.Capture field recordings/interviews at international festivals (WOMEX, globalFEST, WOMAD, Colours of Ostrava, A to JazZ, etc.) and bring them to air.Recruited pro bono creative from advertising/design partners to strengthen membership campaigns, visual identity, and public storytelling.Helped architect the station’s digital shift: advocated for reliable streaming, archive organization, editorial metadata, and content workflows so one performance can live across broadcast, web, video, and on-demand.Pushed early platform experimentation (e.g, early YouTube era) to extend reach and long-tail discovery.Built partnerships across labels, consulates/cultural institutes, and community orgs; served as a bridge between editorial and engineering to align mission with infrastructure.Developed repeatable processes for session prep, documentation, and asset handling to future-proof the catalog.Mentored producers and volunteers on research, sequencing, and artist context to maintain high editorial standards. Why it matters:In an age of overwhelming supply, curation and community are critical. My role combines taste + systems—spotlighting artists Seattle might not otherwise hear, and ensuring the station has the pipes, metadata, and workflows to carry those performances to listeners everywhere.
