About Dara Messinger
A native New Yorker, Dara Messinger is a filmmaker and programmer with 20+ years of experience in the documentary industry. As the longtime Director of Programming at DCTV in Chinatown, NYC, she has overseen the honored organization’s public programs. Her work as curator continues and deepens as she now programs its brand new Firehouse: DCTV’s Cinema for Documentary Film. Through DCTV’s many affordable educational and exhibition programs, Dara has helped to support and champion hundreds of filmmakers from a diversity of backgrounds and their independent projects. She has facilitated screenings and conversations with emerging and luminary filmmakers alike, and has initiated and nurtured partnerships with many industry and local organizations. Through all of her initiatives, she continues to challenge and break down traditional power structures to highlight a myriad of makers, stories and styles.In addition to her work at DCTV, Dara is an active filmmaker and has been a member of the award-winning Meerkat Media Collective since 2008, helping to develop the group into an established self-governed body of filmmakers and artists. She has collaborated on many projects in various roles and is currently directing a personal feature documentary about her parents, small business and the American dream.
