Recognizing that a 2023 ASCO guideline recommending geriatric assessment for all older adults initiating cancer treatment was not being implemented, I launched and now lead a clinical informatics initiative to close that gap at an NCI-designated cancer center. I am working under the mentorship of Drs. Heidi Klepin, Ajay Dharod, and Bradley Rowland. As principal investigator, I built and now oversee a multidisciplinary team - including oncologists, Epic informaticists, nurses, and nurse navigators - to integrate ASCO’s Practical Geriatric Assessment (PGA) into clinical workflows via Epic. I earned Epic Physician Builder certification to develop EHR tools that are fully compliant with regulatory standards.I drafted the IRB protocol, obtained approval, and presented our proposal to the Advocate Health Medical Oncology Governance Council, successfully navigating the system’s complex regulatory and operational landscape. Our project was approved for implementation across Wake Forest Baptist and is now being evaluated for expansion across Advocate Health—the third largest nonprofit integrated health system in the United States.
