About Daniel Sorungbe
I’m an Emory University Anthropology student (B.S, with Human Biology and Religion) working at the intersection of sound, Black queer nightlife, and multimodal ethnography. My research and creative practice ask how people theorize through music, movement, vibe, and sensory experience, particularly in spaces where dominant Western ideas of knowledge don’t fully hold.My current work centers on Black queer participation in underground rave scenes (Atlanta/London), using ethnography, oral history, autoethnography, and sonic methods. I’ve grown increasingly disenchanted with the study of rave as a site of ritual, and instead urge a shift in focus to viewpoints of embodiment, collective Black worldmaking, and music composition as public anthropology in relation to rave.As a first-generation Nigerian student, I care deeply about scholarship that stays accountable to lived experience and community needs. Currently, I’m preparing for graduate study across anthropology/ethnomusicology/music composition, continuing to build projects that move between fieldwork, writing, and sound.
