ABOUT DANIEL SHEPHERD

I\'m the British Ambassador Designate to Guinea, currently on pre-posting training, and starting the role in April 2025. Most recently, as Deputy High Commissioner at the UK\'s largest diplomatic mission in the Caribbean, I cover all aspects of the UK’s relationship with Jamaica: security, foreign policy, law enforcement cooperation, trade relations, consular issues, development. I have previously run the UK\'s consular (citizens\' services) network in 34 embassies, high commissions and consulates general across the 46 countries of Sub Saharan Africa. I ran complex operations in challenging environments, service delivery and remote management (I directly supervised operations managers in five different countries) which gave an added dimension to my previous diplomatic and public affairs work. As a future career move I would be open to secondments, a career change or break in industry, finance, international organisations, think tanks or consultancies who would value my experience at the heart of global decision-making. I\'ve chaired meetings of the 28 states of the G8 Global Partnership Against Weapons and Materials of Mass Destruction to successful outcomes, prepared for the 2014 and 2016 Nuclear Security Summit as a \"sous sherpa\", negotiated on counter-terrorism and counter-proliferation at the UN in New York (including resolutions imposing the strongest ever Iran and North Korea nuclear sanctions). As spokesperson for the UK at the UN, I maintained the reputation of the UK as a global player and shaped the international media agenda as the Arab spring unfolded. I\'ve previously worked on climate change, trade policy, economics, political affairs and international relations in two emerging and dynamic Asian economies: Vietnam in the late 90s as it reformed after decades of central planning, and India from 20••••08 as it emerged as a powerhouse of global growth. Languages: working Vietnamese, French, Spanish and Portuguese. Communications: strat comms, media relations, crisis management, digital diplomacy. Policy specialisms: counter-terrorism, WMD proliferation, trade policy, WTO and market access, international climate change architecture. Cross-cutting: strategic communications, liaison with government and multilateral institutions, public sector restructuring, government finance, programme management, cross-cultural communication, managing multidisciplinary teams
