ABOUT DANIEL KEANE
I am a final-year MSci student at the University of Glasgow, studying Physics with Astrophysics. My academic interests centre on solar and particle physics, with a focus on developing both theoretical understanding and practical research skills. Research Experience • Internship at Queen’s University Belfast (School of Mathematics and Physics), investigating the EUV Late Phase phenomenon in solar flares. • Internship with the Astronomy Research Group at Glasgow, funded by the Royal Astronomical Society, researching hot flows in post-flare loops. • Achieved a high first-class grade for a master’s literature review on direct detection methods of dark matter, analysing nuclear recoil signatures and exploring the roles of dark matter detectors (e.g. LUX-ZEPLIN) and gravitational wave observatories (e.g. LIGO). Academic Skills • Proficient in Python for data analysis and simulation; developing expertise in C++. Leadership & Teaching • Sole School Representative for Physics & Astronomy on the Student Representative Council. • Former Class Representative and current tutor in Physics and Mathematics across SQA levels. Science Communication & Outreach • Student Engagement Intern for the College of Science & Engineering, leading digital outreach initiatives. • Former Publicist for the Glasgow University Physics Society. I am motivated by opportunities to contribute to collaborative research environments, advance our understanding of astrophysical processes, and communicate science through teaching and outreach. I intend to pursue a PhD to continue developing as a researcher and to contribute meaningfully to the academic community.
