I am involved in multiple projects and work closely with predoctoral dental students, residents and Marquette University undergraduate students. To date, I have mentored and collaborated with 20 students. Overall, the projects mainly involve tissue engineering and dental biomaterials. Experiments include fabrication, characterization and in vitro biocompatibility assays of scaffolds; cell culture of various oral cells (gingival fibroblasts, osteoblasts, dental pulp stem cells) and human umbilical vein endothelial cells; assessing the cytotoxicity of different dental biomaterials; synthesis and evaluation of nanoparticles on mammalian and bacterial cells; investigating the antimicrobial effects of restorative materials, nanoparticles, and scaffolds on oral bacteria (e.g. Enterococcus faecalis, Streptococcus mutans). Research findings have been presented in scientific meetings and/or published in peer-reviewed journals.
