ABOUT DANIEL THORNHILL

I am a program officer at the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, where I support research that advances our understanding of the ecological and evolutionary roles of symbiosis in aquatic systems. For more than a decade at the U.S. National Science Foundation, I helped develop and manage funding programs in the Ocean Sciences Division and the Research, Innovation, Synergies, and Education (RISE) Division, supporting research communities across the marine sciences and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. I bring a broad perspective on the research landscape and on strategies for supporting impactful science through federal and philanthropic funding. My background in ecology, oceanography, symbiosis, and conservation informs my work connecting researchers, ideas, and resources to advance discovery and address pressing environmental challenges. I am also committed to mentoring scientists and expanding participation in STEM, and I value opportunities to support and strengthen the research community.
