Substitute Teacher
Shasta County Office Of Education
Feb 2024 — Present · Redding, CA, US
As a credentialed substitute teacher for 13 rural districts in Shasta County, I provide instructional, behavioral, and nursing support to PreK–12 students with moderate-to-severe special needs (non-verbal autism, emotional dysregulation, conduct disorder, Down syndrome, oppositional defiant disorder, and medically fragile conditions such as Copenhagen Syndrome). I\'ve collaborated with LVNs, school nurses, Speech Pathologists, RNs, BCBAs, BTs, and OTs to deliver holistic care: assisted feeding, g-tube data tracking, wheelchair transfers and transportation, hygiene support, clothing/changing, and toileting. I manage socio-emotional crises in ERICS classrooms using ABA techniques—token economies and tailored reinforcement—while collecting qualitative and quantitative data to refine IEPs and BIPs.From November to May 2025, as a long-term substitute for the MVJPA and teacher of record during the regular teacher’s medical leave, I established clear boundaries and rapport, transforming refusals, elopement, and severe behaviors into consistent academic engagement. Under my guidance, six students completed math, history, science, and ELA worksheets, five science tests, three math tests, and over 200 pages of work. I designed customized lecture slides, including a fully completed unit on neuroscience, and integrated intrinsic SEL through a variety of collaborative experiments and assignments. I elevated average DPR scores by ~130%(2.8 → 3.65/4).I also navigated profound behavioral-health challenges—51/50 holds, family suicides, assaults, CPS reporting—providing trauma-informed support and fostering resilience amid discrimination by general-ed staff. Through the creation of tests, worksheets, schedules, and DPR tracking, I ensured these students experienced their first sustained academic success and emotional safety in a rural, under-resourced environment.
