About Daniel Hutabarat
Daniel is a Geotechnical Design Engineer, licensed in multiple states (WA, OR, ID, NV), with 15 years of industry and research experience. He holds a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, with a major in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and a minor in Computational Mechanics and Engineering Seismology. Daniel specializes in designing seismic-resistant and cost-effective foundation and ground improvement solutions for infrastructure in the seismically active U.S. Pacific Northwest, including transportation, industrial, data center, residential, and waterfront projects. His expertise includes soil improvement techniques, such as soil-cement mixing, vibratory methods, and rigid inclusions, as well as pile foundations and earth-retaining structures. In 2019, Daniel received the Outstanding Paper Award from the Technical Committee (TC) 203 \"Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering and Associated Problems\" of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE). He also currently serves as a volunteer reviewer for highly cited geotechnical journals, including ASCE JGGE, EERI Earthquake Spectra, and JGS Soils and Foundations. He was a member of the U.S. NSF GEER team that investigated the massive liquefaction-induced flowslide following the 2018 Palu, Indonesia Earthquake.Outside of geotechnical engineering, Daniel is an active drummer and guitarist, serving on his church worship team. He also enjoys exploring the Pacific Northwest with his family and friends. Romans 11:36 NIV

Nov 2023 — Present · Seattle, WA, US
Building foundation for sustainable future. I am responsible for designing and analyzing complex geotechnical analyses to identify innovative, practical, and cost-effective foundation or ground improvement solutions for various types of geosystem infrastructure constructed throughout the Western U.S. The infrastructure includes transportation, residential, industrial, data center, warehouse, and waterfront structures, as well as land development constructed in one of the highest seismicity regions in the world. These projects involve various foundation designs and techniques including deep soil mixing, vibro-piers, rigid inclusions, CFA piles, jet-grouting, and wick-drains.
