ABOUT DANIEL AUGUSTINE

ProfessionalI am President of the British Society of Echocardiography, Consultant Cardiologist at the Royal United Hospital Bath and Honorary Professor at the University of Bath. I qualified in 2002 from St Bartholomew’s and the Royal London Medical School and completed my cardiology training in the South West of England. I have undertaken a cardiovascular imaging research fellowship at the University of Oxford and gained a MD(Res). I have specialty expertise in cardiac imaging (echocardiography and cardiac MRI), sports cardiology, pulmonary hypertension and cardio-oncology.I am one of the national Football Association (FA) advisory panel cardiologists and a sports cardiologist working with a number of sports teams / organisations. These include the FA / professional football teams, Bath Rugby, Bristol Rugby, Somerset Cricket, Great Britain (GB) swimming, England woman’s cricket team, GB bobsleigh, GB skeleton, GB modern Pentathlon, GB Rowing and GB athletics. I am an Editor of several cardiology text books including the Oxford handbook of Echocardiography (most recent edition published 2020 by Oxford University Press, OUP) and the European textbooks in core cardiology (OUP, 2024).Education I enjoy an active role in teaching and following completion of the Certificate of Medical Education (University of Bristol) I was awarded Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2013. I have authored 5 international cardiology textbooks, all published by Oxford University Press. I am lead Editor of the pan European EECC cardiology registrar textbooks (published 2024). In 2023 I was appointed as Honorary Professor at the University of Bath. I have enjoyed lecturing on the University of Bath Sports & Exercise medicine MSc since 2019. I lead the sports cardiology lectures for the FIFA football medicine MSc which started in 2023 and I am an invited lecturer on the St George’s University sports cardiology MSc. ResearchI am the cardiology research lead at the RUH Bath. I have undertaken a research fellowship at the John Radcliffe hospital & University of Oxford (MD 2014) involving the use of advanced imaging in the detection of clinical and sub clinical cardiovascular disease. I enjoy supervising PhD and MSc students. Research interests: novel markers to improve the detection of cardiovascular disease; echocardiography in the detection of pulmonary hypertension; wearable technology in cardiac rehab; the athletes heart.
