ABOUT DANA CIOCAN

Hi! I\'m Dana and I work at Octopus Energy, where I maintain and build new features for the web using Next.js, React, GraphQL, TypeScript, CSS, Node.js, Vercel and more. I got into web development as a teenager, writing my very first website about my favourite bands on the family computer using just HTML and CSS (and a tiny bit of JavaScript). It quickly became my favourite thing to do, so I chose to pursue a degree in Computer Science at Warwick University. Since then, I\'ve gained over 20 years of experience in web development in all kinds of technologies and I still adore working in this space. I am passionate about creating amazing digital products that are accessible, performant and lovely to look at, while not forgetting about important things like observability, sustainability and high availability. I love learning new skills and putting them to good use and am at my happiest and most engaged when applying something new I\'ve learned to a tricky problem. I ran the front end Community of Practice at The Economist, which was a joy and I still give talks in my new job. I also mentor several folks at various skill levels, sharing my knowledge and skills and helping them grow and learn. I write a blog at danaciocan.com where I explain many different technical concepts in an easy-to-understand way - I am always eager to expand my own skill set and this is one way I try to keep on top of the constantly shifting world of tech. I have worked hard to learn new skills in infrastructure in the last few years, most recently certifying as an AWS Solutions Architect. I also very much enjoy attending local tech meetups and conferences in Birmingham.
