I lead a research group that uses and develops cutting-edge methods in epidemiology, statistics, and microbiology. We use these approaches to understand, predict, and optimize the impact of vaccines and other interventions against respiratory pathogens. This work is supported by grants from the NIH and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Much of our work focuses on the pneumococcus, a major bacterial pathogen that causes a large burden of disease worldwide, particularly among young children and the elderly. Major research questions are related to bacterial evolution and strain emergence, bacterial-viral co-infections, and seasonal determinants of bacterial disease incidence. We are also doing a lot of work on RSV, a major cause of hospitalization in babies and an important but under-appreciated cause of hospitalization in older adults.We also focus on developing new methods to improve the interpretation of disease surveillance data and to understand variations in vaccine impact between populations. These projects have direct relevance for interpreting post-vaccination disease data and for understanding the potential impacts of bacterial evolution on long-term vaccine effectiveness. I am also an affiliate of the Yale Emerging Infections Program-a joint venture between Yale, the Connecticut Department of Public Health, and the CDC. I have led spatiotemporal investigations into the novel drivers of legionellosis and have applied novel analytic tools to evaluations of vaccine impact against HPV and influenza.
