ABOUT DAN WALKER
I have been incredibly fortunate to navigate a fascinating career so far, firstly in the academic world – pursuing post-doctoral research in fluid and structural dynamics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and holding a lectureship in Engineering Science at the University of Oxford – and then in industry, ultimately leading engineering and technology at two of the world’s largest natural resource companies, bp and Rio Tinto. At Rio Tinto – I’m accountable for setting and delivering the company’s innovation and technology strategy, both to drive operational excellence and future growth. I lead the research and technology development portfolio, engineering, and the growth and ventures unit, which includes corporate venture capital, incubation, and commercial scale-up.At bp – I held senior leadership roles across the company, including Vice President of Engineering and Global Head of Technology for New Energy. I also established and led the emerging and disruptive technology unit, and led the strategy team that created the company’s net zero carbon ambition and strategy. What else – I’ve been on the board of directors for multiple companies and joint ventures, including currently serving as Non-Executive Director on the Ocean Infinity Group Board. I’m a chartered mechanical engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. When I am at my best – working on the frontier and tackling complex challenges. Identifying potential disruptors and growing new technology businesses. Initiating and driving change, including transforming organisations at pace.
