It was a chance e-mail at the Western Michigan University library that changed my path forever. An internship at local radio station WKZO-AM in their news department started my “media story” that saw me enter and never look back on the power, value and importance of local broadcasting. Starting as an unpaid intern in news, hosting a sports/talk show, anchoring sports reports for 13 stations before managing our digital sales efforts in Michigan and Indiana all lead to taking over as General Sales Manager and VP/Market Manager in Fargo, North Dakota. Michigan raised, WMU trained, North Dakota made. Learning through real-world learning is what our industry needs to return to. We are the content creators while every other algorithm pulls from the content produced by local, regional and national broadcasters. Instead of being offended, it’s time to celebrate the vital content produced daily.
