ABOUT DALTON WALKER
Dalton, Red Lake Anishinaabe, is an award-winning journalist based in Phoenix. Dalton is the managing editor of the O\'odham Action News in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community in Arizona. He spent nearly five years as a senior reporter before leaving in 2020.Before returning to Salt River, Dalton spent nearly five years at ICT, formerly Indian Country Today, as a national correspondent, deputy managing editor and managing editor. While there, his team won multiple awards.Dalton has served on the Journalism Funding Partners and the Indigenous Journalists Association boards. He also served as a Chips Quinn mentor and a mentor for a Report for America journalist. In 2023, Dalton participated in Poynter\'s Leadership Academy for Diversity in Media, a leadership program that trains BIPOC journalists to thrive professionally and personally. Since 2022, he has provided a short news segment for his hometown radio station, WRLN 105.3 FM, Red Lake Nation Radio.Dalton is a speaker and presenter to various local academic institutions concerning journalism and Native youth empowerment. Dalton has worked at The Gazette in Colorado Springs, Sioux Falls Argus Leader and Omaha World-Herald. Dalton also worked for the National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development as the media and content manager.He is a graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He is a Chips Quinn Scholar and a graduate of the American Indian Journalism Institute. For years, he has mentored high school and college students AIJI in Vermillion, SD and at the Native American Journalism Career Conference at Crazy Horse, near Custer, SD.
