On my son’s first birthday, I was told I was dying.Stage IV oesophageal cancer. Inoperable. Incurable.11.5 months to live.Two weeks earlier, my partner had undergone lung cancer surgery.Our eldest (Axel, 3 at the time) named my tumour “Dave” - because, in his words, “Dave’s that annoying man who turns up and never leaves.”That humour became our armour. But what followed exposed something bigger than my diagnosis - it exposed the cracks in a healthcare system designed for treatment, not survival.I’m not anti-NHS. I took chemo and immunotherapy.But I also refused to be a passive patient.When standard care reached its limits, I built my own evidence-based, complementary strategy to strengthen treatment, reduce side effects, and reclaim control.No pseudo-science.
