About Derek Chan
I have been a programmer since I was kid. oh yeah. I started my first gwbasic program when I was grade 6. After graduated from college, I flew all the way to Austin, Texas to pursuit my graduate degree in computer science. Upon graduation in I started working with Verizon Data Services in the Software System Architect Development Program. When Verizon started selling smartphones in 2008, I\'ve got the opportunity to develop mobile apps on Android and iOS. Since then, I have been drawn into this mobile black hole, but I love it every minute. In 2010, I moved from Dallas to Seattle. Seattle is always the outdoor heaven to me and I love every minutes, rain or shine. I did 3 Ironman races since living here. After 6 months, I had an opportunity to work for a startup called DataSphere, which main business was in local advertising. This was my first experience working in a smaller company with a faster pace of getting thing done. The faster pace environment fit me perfectly. Although my time in DataSphere was just a year, I was able to help DataSphere to create the suite of mobile products, including mobile web and native apps. After DataSphere, I landed in my current job at Alaska Airlines. In the past 7 years, I have grown from a Mobile Developer into Enterprise Mobile Architect and into my current role as a Software Development Manager (SDM). Recently, my focus has been put into engineering and team management. My goal is to create teams which can deliver quality software iteratively with great throughput. I also want to practice servant leadership so I can help my team grow as a team and individual. To be a successful SDM, I believe technical skills are very important. If the SDM doesn’t keep up with the current technology, he will not understand the decision made by the team and won’t be able to provide necessary support. Therefore, I have been continuous learning from technical articles and video.
