Health Care Chief Ethics Consultant (HCCEC) Roles and Responsibilities(1) Develop and nurture a healthcare ethics community at the VA medical facility.(2) Manage the VA medical facility Healthcare Ethics Consultation Service (ECS) and ensure that the service operates in alignment with the VA medical facility (ECS) practice requirements.(3) Develop and maintain a VA medical facility SOP that outlines local procedures to implement VHA Directive 1004 requirements and operationalize the VA medical facility ECS practice requirements.(4) Meet with the assigned ELT member (VA medical Chief of Staff or ADPCS) quarterly and as needed to review healthcare ethics work.(5) Request support from National Center HealthCare Ethics Consultation, as appropriate, regarding healthcare ethics-related matters such as healthcare ethics consultation, education, and community-building activities.(6) Serve as a VA medical facility Healthcare ethics consultant (EC) on the VA medical facility ECS.(7) Demonstrate basic competency within 18 months of appointment as the VA medical facility HCCEC and maintain competency annually thereafter.(8) Lead the VA medical facility Healthcare ECS in continuous improvement.(9) Recommend clinicians to serve as VA medical facility Healthcare ECs and ensure are incorporated into incumbents’ functional statements or other formal delineations of job responsibilities.(10) Support VA medical facility ECs to demonstrate and maintain competency, and provide training to VA medical facility ECs on ECS processes and procedures.(11) Provide NCEHC with current, accurate information necessary to maintain the directory of VA medical facility ECS membership.
