Developing the next generation of neobanks. SumUp Pay is a virtual (physical coming soon) payment card offering 0.5% cashback and a whole host of features like free P2P transactions, bill splitting, and money saving via Spaces (aka Pockets or Pots). Developed the entire backend for Spaces to enable users to move money from their main digital wallet to sub wallets, complete with names, themes, savings goals, and round up transactions.Designed and developed the first iteration of a payment scheduling system for automatically moving funds into Spaces. Participated in multiple hackathons where I was the sole backend engineer. The outcome of one of the projects was round up transactions where, if the user has the feature enabled, the remainder of non-round transactions amounts (£0.19 of a £2.81 transaction) gets multiplied by a user-set number and the result is the amount of funds to \"save\" to a Space (which I find pretty cool :D). Deployed with Docker; Orchestrated with Kubernetes; Data persistence via PostgreSQL; Caching via Redis; Protobuf and gRPC for client-server communication; Kafka for communication with other company systems; Metrics captured via Prometheus and visualised in Grafana. Google Analytics, AppsFlyer, and Snowflake for user metrics.

ABOUT CURTIS MARTIN
Since writing my first Python script in school, I\'ve been hooked on writing code. Straight out of school, I began an apprenticeship that allowed me to work full-time as a software engineer while also studying computer science part-time at one of the country\'s most prestigious universities. I started focusing on frontend development, building SPAs using Angular, React, and TypeScript. However, over time, I found my interest drifting to encompass more of the backend functionality of the systems I built. During this period, I worked on monoliths, embedded DLLs, and services using languages like C++, C, and Java before finally setting my eyes on Go(lang) microservices.Now I stand as a Software Engineer with over six years of experience and a particular love for backend development, especially for highly scalable and available systems utilising Go(lang)(i.e, the most enjoyable and scalable language I\'ve ever used).I actively seek out projects that stretch my current capabilities and knowledge, forcing me to improve so I can deliver better products. This has led me to widen my horizons and increase my skills and understanding of topics like caching, distributed databases, and architectural design, all of which I greatly enjoy.Beyond the professional realm, I enjoy hiking, motorcycling, and reading. The joy of reaching a summit after a strenuous climb mirrors the satisfaction I get when I finally solve a challenging problem, like fixing an annoying bug that\'s fighting back or designing a new microservice.And, as a bonus, here\'s a quote to ponder: “We are what we repeatedly do.
