Curtis works at the intersection of microbiology, public health, bioinformatics, and software development. He spends most of his time developing bioinformatics software, analyzing DNA sequence data from a variety of infectious diseases, and teaching & empowering scientists at public health laboratories for performing their own data analysis.    Building bioinformatics capacity at US state & local & international public health laboratories for pathogen surveillance, namely SARS-CoV-2.• Develops, tests, & maintains bioinformatics analysis workflows for the characterization & typing of a variety of viral and bacterial pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2, Mpox, Influenza, Salmonella enterica, Escherichia coli, Shigella spp, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Klebsiella spp, Acinetobacter baumannii, etc.• Designs & delivers training courses to build bioinformatics capacity among scientists at US state & local public health labs as well as international public health labs.• Provides top-of-the-line bioinformatics support to aid laboratories in genomic surveillance & epidemiology of viral and bacterial pathogens.• Assists with NGS data analysis for large-scale genomic surveillance efforts such as California Department of Public Health\'s COVIDNet project.
