About Cullen Hughes
I have two decades of experience developing partnerships in 45+ countries with corporations and financial institutions, such as PepsiCo, DuPont, General Mills, and Starbucks in Africa and Asia. In chief operating officer and program and partnerships directors positions, I have catalyzed public, philanthropic, and private capital to tackle complex challenges related to poverty, biodiversity, deforestation, sustainable agriculture, fisheries and renewable energy. I’ve led cross-matrixed teams from 5 to 170 professionals and managed portfolios ranging from $500K to $100M.I believe that equitable economic development and conservation is most sustainable where communities, nature, and markets all benefit. My core strength is building relationships and finding common ground through arrangements that align stakeholder interests and de-risk investment in resource-constrained environments. I bring expertise in partnership development, program/project management, budgeting, strategy, performance / risk management, and communicating successes related to economic development, biodiversity, agriculture supply chains, and renewable energy. Therefore, I am seeking Program Management, Strategic Partnerships, Global Alliances, and Philanthropy roles where I can maximize limited resources, and deliver measurable results—on time, on budget, and at scale.Selected Career Highlights:1) Led complex, multi-country portfolios, designing and managing 100+ grants and contracts ($500K–$100M) in biodiversity, agriculture, economic development, and energy sectors.2) Mobilized private capital, leveraging $16M+ in corporate and competitive funding; and structured risk-sharing approaches to unlock investment in biodiversity conservation and agriculture supply chains linked to deforestation, such as livestock, coffee, soybeans, corn, and horticulture.3) Built and stewarded large-scale partnerships with 200+ companies, international institutions, and government partners, expanding energy access across 44 countries in Africa.4) Maximized efficiency, saving $4M in overhead, launching a new country office, and supporting 8M people with life-saving assistance amidst instability.5) Communicated successes at senior levels by briefing ambassadors, Congressional staff, and executives, as well as managed high-profile stakeholder engagements on Capitol Hill and site visits for the U.S. President and Congressional Delegations.
