ABOUT CHRISTOPHER SHATTO

Chris is a PhD candidate in Earth Observation for Forest Monitoring at the University of Bayreuth’s Research Group of Climatology, studying forest ecosystems and their response to environmental changes. He holds a Master’s in Global Change Ecology and a Bachelor’s in Environmental Studies from California State University - Monterey Bay, where he also minored in GIS. As a Software Engineer at OroraTech, he develops data pipelines and processing workflows in Python, turning satellite and meteorological data into insight for wildfire impact and recovery. Skilled in machine learning, geospatial analysis and visualization, he is comfortable analyzing big datasets to tackle modern-day environmental issues, like understanding wildfire patterns across Europe and building tools for real-time environmental monitoring. His goal is to advance Earth Observation techniques to address climate challenges, creating reliable data solutions for researchers and making data palatable for decision-makers and the general public alike. Through his work, he aims to support sustainable forest management and strengthen ecosystem resilience. Other experiences include nearly 10 years of serving/bartending at high-caliber restaurants in Carmel and Monterey and cut his teeth in industry as a Wardrobe Consultant (commissioned salesperson) at Men\'s Wearhouse starting at the age of 17. These formative experiences laid the foundation for the socially dynamic and solution-oriented mindset Chris carries into every project and task laid before him.
