Brian A. Spears started his career in retail management with Dayton- Hudson, a Midwest retail corporation (Acquired by Macy’s). During the course of working there he met Don Davis who was an independent record producer and studio owner. Davis gave Brian the opportunity to learn the music publishing business through the mentoring of M. William Krasilovsky, Esq.(Co-author of the popular book “This Business Of Music”) and managing Groovesville Publishing Company. Spears recei\'ved his recording experience at Davis\' legendary, United Sound Studios, where artists such as Aretha Franklin, Luther Vandross, George Clinton, and Anita Baker recorded tracks. When L.J. Reynolds left the Dramatics in 1984, Spears became his manager and formed his own management consulting company (B.A. Spears & Associates). Then, he met Thomas Whitfield in 1986 when Whitfield was producing Vanessa Bell Armstrong’s Pease Be Still album and began to manage him and run his production company right up until Whitfield’s death in 1991. Spears was also involved in guiding the careers of the legendary gospel group the Clark Sisters under Crystal Ideal Management with partners Michael J. Powell and Attorney Benjamin Whitfield Jr. and envisioned starting a label to complement the management company. In 1993, after signing distribution deals with Benson (CBA) and Sparrow Records/EMI (Mainstream), Crystal Rose Records became a reality. In the 2002 Billboard Year End Charts, Crystal Rose made the Top 10 of Top Gospel Labels/ Imprints. Crystal Rose has released albums on artists’ such as Donald Lawrence & the Tri-City Singers, The Whitfield Company, Ricky Dillard & New G,(the late) Brenda Waters, Special Gift (the late) Kayla Parker’s group, and the legendary Florida A&M University Gospel Choir along with a reunion of The Clark Sisters just to name a few. In spite shrinking CD sales, Crystal Rose has maintained a strong footing in the gospel field and has contributed to the evolution of gospel music.
