   In 1980 Seaways Engineering developed the MPSS, against huge opposition, to provide a low cost, high performance, floating platform to replace the tubular designs that drove rig builders into bankruptcy. Finance for MPSS development was provided by Texas Eastern North Sea Inc, Conoco North Sea Inc, Deminex, Glasgow and Aberdeen Universities and private investors. The MPSS design was presented to major oil companies, along with steel catenary risers, for use as a production platform. Initially it was rejected by the industry but is now widely accepted by many. Shell\'s Head of Floating Production Dr Paul Kerckoff approved it. Conoco approved it. Presentations were made to Petrobras Cenpes and they fully endorsed it building P-51,P-52, P-55 and P-56 using the square ring pontoon principle pioneered by the MPSS in 1980s.The MPSS is currently in construction in China. Standardization of design enables SEL to offer fixed cost platforms.
