ABOUT CRAIG THOMSON

I am a Professor in Sustainability and the Built Environment at Glasgow Caledonian University and in August 2023 took the role of Associate Dean Research for the School of Computing, Engineering and Built Environment. I recently acted as Interim Vice Dean for the School for 3 months at the start of 2024. This followed a 7 month period as Interim Head of Department of Construction and Surveying. Prior to this I was Deputy Head of the Civil Engineering and Environmental Management Department with responsibility for our Environmental Management and Climate Justice suite of programmes at MSc and BSc levels. I lead a number of cross programme modules focused on Sustainability and the Built Environment at both BSc and MSc levels. My research and teaching focus on helping stakeholders of the urban and built environment understand the requirements to deliver a transition towards a sustainable path which is deliverable, just and equitable but at the same time promotes change and innovative solutions. I am the current Chair of the Association of Researchers in Construction Management (ARCOM).I hold an undergraduate Geography degree (graduating in and during this time developed an interest in urban development and regeneration. Following this I spent 5 years with the Construction Management Research Unit (CMRU) at the University of Dundee completing both an MRes and a PhD, in addition to being involved in a variety of other research projects with academic and industrial partners. During this period I developed expertise in the areas of project management, construction innovation, knowledge management, the influence of design and management within social housing on tenant behaviour, maintenance management. Prior to joining the school I worked in local government at Stirling Council conducting research to support policy development, and joining the school in 2006 as a Research Fellow in Sustainable Urban Environments. I become a Lecturer in 2011 leading the departments sustainability modules across MSc and BSc levels and Programme Leader for BSc Environmental Management from 2014 to 2020. In 2015 I became a Senior Lecturer in Sustainability and the Built Environment, and was promoted to Reader in 2019 and becoming a Professor in August 2021.
