About Craig Shank
I am a seasoned technology industry leader building toward a world where technology improves lives, serves people everywhere, and works for our shared future. We have all heard the refrain that \"Technology is neither good nor bad; nor is it neutral.\" People can use technology to be more productive and effective in whatever they do. What matters is what we choose to do with that technology. But technology has never been more powerful - as a result, its impact, positive or negative, has never been greater. I have the ongoing privilege of working with passionate engineers, talented leaders and strong teams worldwide, working across technical, policy and legal boundaries on policies, standards and practices that will play a role in society’s ability to create technology that helps individuals and organizations achieve more – technology that is trusted, responsible and inclusive. I’ve built these capabilities based on:• Over three decades of experience as executive and leader across functions including legal, government advocacy, policy, compliance and standards, as well as operations, business development and product development.• Strategic work to develop external advocacy and internal implementation on some of the most complex and rapidly developing issues at the intersection of technology and society, including innovation, competition, data use and privacy, AI ethics, security and technology neutrality.• Execution and leadership excellence across organizations from large and distributed to small, focused teams. Hands on delivery as well as consultant to company leaders. Ground breaking initiatives on new technologies, development and implementation of new practices.• Leadership of global teams delivering on policy, legal and government requirements. Executive engagement in national capitals around the world. Experience as ex-pat and leader of globally distributed teams.I have enjoyed both successes and “learning experiences” at Microsoft and several other companies in the tech industry, with roles in business development, finance, operations, consulting and legal in both venture backed and public software companies. Before that I was a partner in the technology, intellectual property and mergers and acquisitions practice at Perkins Coie, the Northwest’s largest law firm, with clients from IBM to Nintendo, Amazon, Sierra On-Line and Visio.
