After a long period of uncertainty over refinancing it was announced in October 2021 that nmcn would be going into administration. While this was, sadly, not a total surprise, it was a bitter disappointment as I had thoroughly enjoyed my time at nmcn. Having previously gone through a redundancy process I met this adversary pragmatically and logically. As rumours began to surface that a buyer might be found for the business I hoped for the best but prepared for the worst. Like I’m sure many of my colleagues would have been, I was approached by a wave of enquiries and spoke to many wonderful people offering assistance. I made it clear though that while there remained a chance to continue working with nmcn that that would be my preference. Wonderfully, within a matter of days Galliford Try stepped in to take on nmcn’s Water business, which I was part of. Looking at the geographical map of the operations of each business, and the skills and resources that both have, it couldn’t have been a better fit. The combination of frameworks, forward order books and capacity of the merged companies present a fantastic platform for success in the future. Despite several very attractive opportunities, I chose to continue on my path with Galliford Try and see where it takes me. My eternal gratitude though to those who I spoke to during that crazy week. So, for now at least, I am based out of the same office in Annersley, just off of Junction 27 of the M1, but continue to work primarily from home in my studio office and head into Annersley when required. As with nmcn, I work on the AMP7 framework as part of the Water business Infrastructure and Non-Infrastructure Waste teams dealing with conveyance and treatment of waste and surface water around Severn Trent’s catchment of the Midlands and Mid-Wales. The projects I have been involved in range from minor rehabilitation schemes of only a few thousand pounds right through to major infrastructure proposals of £150m.

ABOUT CRAIG LAWS

An Estimator by profession with 25 years-experience of civil engineering, housing and rail estimating in supplier, sub-contract and main contract capacities. Currently working as an estimator for one of the UK’s largest construction companies, GallifordTry, primarily servicing the AMP7 / AMP8 Framework for Severn Trent Water and specialising in waste-water infrastructure schemes up to £150m in value.I am self-motivated with a desire to continuously improve my skills and refine my output. I am highly organised with a keen attention to detail, always looking to maximise fine margins and win work from competitors for the greatest value. Additionally the challenges of the Covid-lockdown years pushed me into furthering my skills alongside estimating and venturing into social media content creation and opened the doors to significant other opportunities. My experience has given me working knowledge of numerous estimating software including Pursuit, CostOS, several proprietary systems and most regularly ConQuest. I have priced projects to the RMM (Rail Method of Measurement) standard with AMCO and currently to CESMM (Civil Engineering Standard Method of Measurement) with Galliford Try, while Estimating to First Principles. My skills include extensive use and understanding of Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite and AutoCAD.While estimating is my bread and butter, I have been expanding my YouTube video game and product review channel which brings me a great deal of satisfaction and is an enjoyable additional source of revenue. I continue to test and review approximately 200 products per year as part of the Amazon Vine programme as well.2024 brought a new opportunity through Racing Prodigy, an initiative to take sim racing gamers from e2Real and put them in a real-world racing series. Driving Radical SR1 race cars across a number of circuits across America, alongside drivers from 15 countries, I experienced something that has fundamentally changed who I am, what I expect from people around me and how I see my future. Competing against drivers aged between 15-29, at 46 years old I had a mountain to climb to be physically and mentally ready. I learned an awful lot about myself, and how I was regarded by my peers and the organisers. I’ve never felt so warmly appreciated and being part of such an incredible programme is something I will forever be proud of, opening up opportunities and friendships I could never have expected.Away from work I have a fantastically creative wife and a madcap border collie who I make sure to spend as much time as I can with.
