ABOUT COSTAS H. KEFALAS

Costas H. Kefalas, MD, CPE, FACG, FASGE, AGAF, FAASLD has been in practice at Akron Digestive Health, in Akron, Ohio since 2003, and he currently serves as President of the group. He practices general gastroenterology and is also a Physician Board Member of the Digestive Health Center. He is also the President of DIG Holdings, Inc. He is Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine at Northeast Ohio Medical University. Since 2003, he has been on the Active Medical Staff at Summa Health in Akron, where from 20••••22, Dr. Kefalas served on the Summa Health Board of Directors and as Chair of the Committee on Governance, 20••••22. Dr. Kefalas completed an accelerated BS/MD program in 1997, at the University of Akron, where he was a University Scholar in the Honors Program, and at Northeast Ohio Medical University. In he completed an Internal Medicine Residency at Summa Health. He completed a Gastroenterology Fellowship at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas from In 2015, Dr. Kefalas earned a Master of Medical Management from Heinz College of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 2023, he enrolled in the Master of Science (MS) in Population Health Program at the College of Population Health of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 2024, Dr. Kefalas earned the Certified Physician Executive (CPE) credential. Dr. Kefalas has served on numerous national and state professional society boards and committees. He is currently the Vice President of the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) and serves on the ACG Executive Committee and Board of Trustees. He is a Past Chair of the ACG Board of Governors, and from 20••••14, he was the ACG Governor for Northern Ohio. From 20••••20 he served as an ACG Representative to the Digestive Disease National Coalition (DDNC). From 20••••16, Dr. Kefalas was the DDNC President. Dr. Kefalas served as Director on the GI Quality Improvement Consortium (GIQuIC) Board of Directors, and GIQuIC President from 20••••24. Dr. Kefalas co-founded the Ohio Gastroenterology Society in 2009 and served as its Founding President from 20••••13. In 2015, he was appointed a Trustee of the Ohio Medical Quality Foundation Board by Ohio Governor John Kasich and served until 2017. Through his service with professional societies, Dr. Kefalas has lectured on health policy and practice management and has advocated on behalf of patients and gastrointestinal disease, at both the federal and state levels.
