JBEI is one of three DOE Bioenergy Research Centers (BRCs) established by DOE’s Office of Science in 2007 on the basis of a nationwide competition to accelerate fundamental research breakthroughs for the development of advanced, next-generation biofuels. The center brings together four national laboratories (Lawrence Berkeley, Lawrence Livermore, Pacific Northwest, and Sandia) and three academic research partners (UC Berkeley, UC Davis, and Carnegie Institution for Science). I spend 40% of my time at JBEI with the remaining 60% devoted to non-JBEI related projects that I lead up at LBNL.

ABOUT CORINNE SCOWN
I am interested in better understanding the interactions between infrastructure systems and the environment, including the reliance of infrastructure on natural resources, its impacts on the climate, human health, and ecosystems, and potential strategies for improving infrastructure reliability. More specifically, my work in the past few years has been focused on meeting the growing demand for transportation energy both in the US and globally. My PhD research explored the water footprint of producing a wide range of transportation fuels, including gasoline, biofuels, and electricity. I have continued to do work on biofuels, expanding into advanced drop-in fuel production pathways, lignin utilization strategies, and nation-wide scale-up scenarios for both biofuels and plug-in electric vehicles. My colleagues and I tackle these problems using a variety of methods, including-Life-cycle assessment-Scenario analysis-Chemical process modeling-Uncertainty quantification-Input-output analysis-OptimizationIn previous years, I have worked on the Economic Input-Output Life Cycle Assessment tool at Carnegie Mellon, electrical grid reliability and distributed generation at the Northeast-Midwest Institute in Washington, D.C, vulnerability analysis of coal delivery networks in the US, input-output quantification of critical infrastructure interdependence at Carnegie Mellon, and spreadsheet-based transportation energy demand modeling for the World Resources Institute. Specialties: water-energy nexus, air quality, energy and environmental policy, energy demand projections, risk quantification, biofuels, input-output modeling, life-cycle assessment.
