About Conor Patten
I am a Quantitative Management graduate student at Duke University working in football analytics, with a focus on roster construction, salary cap strategy, and player value modeling. My background in finance and accounting from USC shapes how I approach football decision-making. I focus heavily on contract mechanics and cap dynamics, including front-loading, bonus structures, guarantees, void years, and how those levers influence competitive windows and risk over time. I am particularly interested in applying financial reasoning to roster and contract decisions under uncertainty.I build analytics tools that integrate on-field performance with cap forecasting and roster economics. My work emphasizes contract surplus value, positional return on investment, and the tradeoffs between short-term flexibility and long-term sustainability. I have contributed to league-wide analytical efforts, including work related to the NFL Big Data Bowl, and have experience working with tracking and play-level data at scale.Current projects include:• An NFL availability and expected cap risk model using calibrated machine learning• A second-contract probability model for rookie cornerbacks using PFF grading and draft data• Route tree success analytics for Duke Football using PFF charting and R visualization• Coverage and defensive structure modeling informed by DeepCoverageNet-style approachesI am interested in connecting with people working in NFL or CFB front offices, football data and strategy groups, or others focused on the intersection of football, analytics, and roster economics.
